2026 Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.
While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Frogs are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. But, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is also evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears especially powerful.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.
When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
